John's parents Joseph and Sarah (Dawson) Farnsworth went to Canada probably in 1838 when Joseph sold his land in Verona. Apparently John and Mary also went with them because some of their older children were born there. John and Mary returned to Verona before June 1850 where they settled on a small farm beside her parents, Wright and Mary (Atkin) Farnsworth. Mary apparently died sometime before 1865 when John was listed as a widower in the 1865 Verona census.
John next moved to Wayne County, NY with his children where his parents were then living in Marion. On 19 Oct 1867 in Newark, John married his nephew William Farnsworth's widow, Ann Maria Finch. William had been killed in the Civil War. John took in Ann's two children, Susie and John W. Farnsworth. The rest of his days were spent in Wayne County, NY on his small farm near Marion.
