Joseph Farnsworth was baptized 20 Mar 1791 at St. Lawrence, Revesby, Lincolnshire, England. He lived in Tumby when he married Sarah Dawson, spinster of Mareham le Fen, on 26 Dec. 1809 at Kirkby on Bain, Lincolnshire. Both signed by mark. Joseph and Sarah had a large family and moved from parish to parish in Lincolnshire before finally emigrating to the US about 1833-4. No passenger list has yet been found.
Wright and John Farnsworth who were Joseph's older and younger brother, respectively, are listed in the 1834 Utica City directory. On 13 Nov 1835, Joseph and his brother Wright each purchased half of lot 165 in Verona. Joseph and Sarah sold their land in Verona in August 1838 and moved their family to Canada where they lived for some years near Beachville, Ontario.
Joseph and Sarah next moved to Wayne County, New York where they had relatives. Joseph and Sarah were received into the Marion Baptist Church with letters on 4 Nov 1860. Sometime after June 1865 their oldest son John moved with his family to Marion with his family. The Marion Baptist Church records noted Joseph's death on 15 Feb 1867. Joseph is likely buried with Sarah (died 1881) in their son John's plot in the Marion Village Cemetery. John's is the only headstone in his lot, but sexton's records note the other unmarked burials are in that lot.
