Edward Hake was the son of Daniel Hake Jr. and Caroline Hobler. His paternal grandparents were Daniel Hake Sr. and Sarah Ilgefritz Hake. Edward's maternal grandparents were George Hobler and Margarette Catherine Gabrion Hobler.

Edward Hake was instrumental in the restoration of the former Hake Cemetery, now known as the Rock River Cemetery.

Edward married Bertha Wilhelmina Lange on 6 October 1887, in Jefferson County. She was the daughter of August Carl Frederick Lange and Pauline Weber Lange. August was born in 16 November 1839, in Prussia, and died 18 May 1923. Pauline was born on 8 September 1841, Württemberg and died on 6 August 1894. August and Pauline were married on 25 July 1867, in Jefferson County. August and Pauline are buried in the Union Cemetery, in Jefferson, Jefferson County. August was a miller. He came to America in 1867.

Bertha Lange was born on 17 March 1870, in Jefferson and died on 10 April 1932, at her home, on South Main Street, in Jefferson. In 1900, Edward and his family were living in Jefferson. Bertha's father, August Lange was living with them.
