Son of Frank and Winnie Collins Capps. Richard married (1) Frances Roberta Lane, and (2) Dorinda Reaves.

"When Richard Capps went to visit Roberta Lane, he always came barefooted and in his overalls and pretended that he had come to see her brothers, Walter and Luther Lane. He was afraid Roberta's parents wouldn't want him to visit her. Richard's sister, "Rock" (Roxianne) was married to Roberta's uncle, Alfonzo Lane.

On Sunday, October 11, 1896, Rock and Alfonzo picked up Roberta from her home and then picked up Richard at his and took them to the old Methodist Parrish in Marion where they were married without the knowledge of either set of parents. For a year after they were married they lived in a one room house between their parents' homes."


MARION - Richard Capps, 72, of Marion, died early today at his home here after an illness of two weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the home, with the Rev. B. L. Knight officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

A son of the late Frank and Winnie Collins Capps of Marion, Mr. Capps was first married to Miss Roberta Lane, who died in 1941. From this union he is survived by three sons, R. B. Capps of Hartsville, W. S. Capps of Florence and M. L. Capps of Marion; and three daughters, Mrs. T. E. Phillips of Fair Bluff, N.C., Mrs. Coy Vaught of Galivants Ferry and Mrs. Joe Cook of Fayetteville, N.C.

He is also survived by his second wife, Mrs. Dora Stone Capps; four step children, J. A. Stone of Sanford, N.C., Mrs. Leila A. Tompkins and J. L. Stone of Marion and Mrs. Esther Lee Williams of Jacksonville, Fla.

Mr. Capps is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Winnie Sanders of Columbia; a brother, Frank Capps of Darlington; and 26 grandchildren.
