Born Dec. 27, 1928 in Smithsburg, Md. he was the son of the late Jacob A. and Ruth A. (Harbaugh) Martin.
He was a graduate of Washington Township High School, Waynesboro with the Class of 1947. He later went on to obtain a business degree from Hagerstown Business College in 1954.
Mr. Martin served in the United States Army during the Korean War until his honorable discharge. He received a Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars, and a Combat Infantryman Badge.
He and his wife of 61 years, Joanne E. (Boyko) Martin were married Nov. 8, 1957 in Washington, D.C. They resided in College Park, Md. until moving to Carroll Valley in 1992.
Mr. Martin was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture as a systems accountant in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1985. After his retirement he started a renovation business, Martin Enterprises, in College Park and then eventually moving the business to Carroll Valley.
He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Gettysburg, the Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro, and an active member of Disabled American Veterans, driving veterans to the VA Medical Center. Mr. Martin was also very active in Habitat for Humanity putting his hobbies of renovating and woodworking to great use. He loved gardening, and enjoyed collecting clocks and working on puzzles. He also loved playing the guitar and singing. Mr. Martin enjoyed cheering on the Washington Redskins and the Washington Capitals.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two children, Shelley Devlin and her husband Mike of Myersville, Md. and David Drew Martin and his wife Denise of Thurmont, Md.; two grandchildren, Heather and Christopher Devlin; two sisters, Beulah Mentzer and Cleo Martin both of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by five siblings: Letha Martin, Gilbert Martin, Leroy Martin, Leone Fitz, and Earl Martin.
Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019 in the Trinity United Church of Christ, 60 E. High Street, Gettysburg, with Rev. Dr. Frederick Young officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Waynesboro.
