Levi was the son of Ammon Meshach Tenney, Sr. and Anna Sariah Eagar.

Levi's parents were members of the Mormon church and had been living in Mexico, so they could continue practicing polygamy. When all foreigners were driven out of Mexico by Mexican revolutionaries in 1912, Levi fled to Hachita, New Mexico with his wife and children, and his mother Anna Sariah Eagar Tenney. Levi and his wife later moved to El Paso, Texas, where there were many other Americans who had escaped from Mexico to the States because of the Mexican revolution.

Levi married Clara Emma Acord June 15, 1898 in Colonia Diaz, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Levi and Clara had at least five children together:

Maude Tenney (1900 - 1987)
Hettie Tenney (1903 - 1997)
Levi Stewart Tenney, Jr. (1905 - 1978)
Alice Tenney (1908 - 1986)
Lucille Tenney (1911 - 1969)

Some records indicate there might have been two other children who were born but did not survive past infancy.
