Ammon was the son of Ammon Meshach Tenney, Sr. and Anna Sariah Eagar.

Ammon went with his parents to Mexico in 1890, so his father could continue practicing polygamy. The family lived there from 1890 to 1912, when they were driven out by the Mexican Revolution.

Like his father, Ammon Jr. was a polygamist; he married:

(1) Amanda Louise Thayne December 31, 1895 in Colonia Dublan, Mexico. They later divorced.

They had seven children together:

David Nephi Tenney, Sr. (1899 - 1992)
Benjamin Eagar Tenney (1902 - 1902)
Amber Tenney (1904 - 1904)
Thomas Reid Tenney (1905 - 1996)
Eagar Tenney (1906 stillborn)
Burdell Thayne Tenney (1914 - 2007)

(2) Elizabeth Thayne (sister of Amanda Louise Thayne) December 6, 1906 (unknown place). They later divorced.

They had two children together:

Milton D. Tenney (1910 - )
Mildred Tenney (1913 - )
