After his father William Hugh Kennedy's sudden death in Brown County, Ohio in 1845 of cholera, his widowed mother Margaret Jane Kennedy and twenty-five of her children and other family members in 1855 all relocated to Douglas County, Kansas where they settled in the Kennedy Valley by the Wakarusa River.

Joseph Warren Kennedy died in Brown County, Ohio at the age of two, about fifteen years before that migration.

His widowed mother Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy hated to leave behind her homestead in Brown County, Ohio and the graves of Joseph Warren, her daughter Elizabeth Kennedy Liming, her daughter Matilda Kennedy and her husband William Hugh Kennedy when she left Brown County, Ohio for Douglas County, Kansas. After much consideration and with a heavy heart, his mother decided she must join her remaining living children as they relocated to Kansas.

His mother Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy mourned Joseph, her daughters Elizabeth and Matilda and her husband Hugh Kennedy all of her life in Brown County, Ohio and then when the Kennedy family migrated to Lawrence County, Kansas.
