Sarah Jane Kennedy Neal was the third child and first girl born to William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy in Brown County, Ohio.

She was one of thirteen Kennedy children of William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio, with Margaret Jane, as a widow, of Douglas County, Kansas.

In 1845 her father Hugh died suddenly in a cholera epidemic in Brown County, Ohio.

In 1854-1855, Sarah's widowed mother Margaret Jane and about 25 members of the Kennedy family migrated to Douglas County, Kansas, where they settled near the Wakarusa River in what is called the Kennedy Valley.

Sarah Jane was the only living Kennedy child who did not make the migration, instead choosing to remain in Brown County, Ohio with her husband and their children. Sarah was married to John Neal on March 14, 1855, in Brown County, Ohio, just before her mother and sister Salina Kennedy migrated with the family in 1855 to Douglas County, Kansas.

Sarah was the mother of Charles Eugene Neal, William Bainbridge Neal, Jessie Belle Neal Robinson and John R. Neal
