Nettie was one of the thirteen children of William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio, with Margaret Jane, after being widowed, of Wakarusa, Douglas County, Kansas.

Her father William Hugh Kennedy died suddenly in Brown County, Ohio in 1845 of cholera.

She was the granddaughter of Jonathan (John) Ralston and Elizabeth "Betsy" Pitzer Ralston of Brown County, Ohio.

She was married to William Henry Curless on December 3, 1847 in Hamersville, Brown County, Ohio. Nettie and William Curless joined approximately twenty-five Kennedy relatives when they all relocated to Douglas County, Kansas in 1855, settling in the Kennedy Valley by the Wakarusa River.

Nettie married William Curless and her older brother, William Bainbridge Kennedy married William's sister, Elizabeth Curless. Their children were therefore "double cousins".

She was the mother of ten children.

Nettie and her husband William and their children later relocated to Liberal, Barton County, Missouri, 105 miles from the Kennedy Valley in Douglas County, Kansas. She was the second to last surviving child of the thirteen Kennedy children of Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy.

Nettie, her husband and seven of their children are buried in this same cemetery.
