Son of Alexander Beckstead and Keziah Albine Petty

Married Josephine Riley, 21 Jan 1896, West Jordan, Salt Lake, Utah

Children - Gladys Beckstead, Iris Beckstead, Josephine Carmita Becktead

Married Theresa Alice Mae Corey, 14 Dec 1905, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah

History - ira Beckstead was a rough spoken man who was respected and sometimes feared. He was "Irrie" to all who knew him.

He was born in West Jordan, Utah, in 1867, ninth child of Alexander and Keziah A. Petty Beckstead. He moved to Bingham Junction (Midvale) in 1896 and married Josephine Riley. They had three daughters.

The old Beckstead home was a two-room lumber adobe lined house that stood on the Southeast corner of Main and Lennox Streets. The Beckstead farm took up a quarter of the block that now contains for large apartment buildings and five houses.

Ira was a police officer most of his life. He joined the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department in 1903 under Joseph C. Sharp and C. Frank Emery. He and his partner, Dave Beckstead, quit the Sheriff's department and then went to work for the police department of Bingham Junction.

A dedicated police officer, helped capture three men who, in the process of robbing the Golden Gate Saloon one Christmas Eve, killed a Midvale police officer.

Ira was a crack shot. I have seen him throw five empty cans in the air at one time and hit them all before they hit the ground.

He was kind and considerate of the law abiding people who were trying to make the most out of life, especially those from foreign countries who had come to Midvale to make their homes.

The day of his burial, many friends from different ethnic groups who could not find a place in the church service, lined the street to pay him homage. - Ira B. Searle
