This memorial is NOT a duplicate memorial. James Angel Sr. & James Henry Angel were not the same person. Often confused, these two men had different wives and different children. They both appear in the 1860 census as the head of their respective households, living in different states (KY & TN). Again, NOT a duplicate memorial.
***************************************************************************************

James Angel Sr. was born on June 23 (?), 1806, probably in Claiborne Co., TN. Most family trees show James as having been born in Campbell County. Possible. Campbell County was created on Sept. 11, 1806. It was formed from parts of Claiborne and Anderson counties. Consequently, James' birth county (Campbell or Claiborne) depends on the correctness of his birth date in 1806.

In many family trees James Angel Sr. is often confused with a James Henry Angel (abt 1800-1887) who lived in Pulaski Co., Kentucky. James Henry Angel, whose parents are currently unknown, was apparently married twice. His first marriage was to Tennessee born Mary MNU (abt 1835-abt 1865). She bore him seven children. In 1866, he married Mary Ann "Polly" Adkins (1833-1912), born in Pulaski Co., KY. The known children (14 & 13) of the two James Angels are often mistakenly combined.

As mentioned earlier, James Angel Sr. and James Henry Angel were not the same person. They both appear in the 1860 census living in different states. James Angel Sr. is living in Scott Co., TN with his wife, Sarah "Sary/Sallie" King, and their eight living children. James Henry Angel is living in Pulaski Co., KY with his wife, Mary Ann "Polly" Adkins, and three of their children.

James Angel Sr. was the son of Archibald "Arch" Angel (1775-1847) and Nancy Ann Trammell (1782-1826). James' parents married about 1804 and were early settlers in northeastern Tennessee. His mother, Nancy, is thought to be the second adult burial (1829) in the Angel Cemetery (aka Angel-Wright Cemetery). Nancy's brother, James Trammell (1774-1826), was the first adult burial (1826) and has the oldest readable marker in the cemetery. Nancy's mother-in-law, Mary Rachel (Godwin) Angel, was buried there in 1841 and Nancy's husband, Arch, in 1847.

The Angel Family Cemetery, located on the former Archibald Angel family farm, was once a part of NE Campbell County. Both are now in NW Scott County (created in 1849), located near the present day community of Ketchen. James' parents, Arch and Nancy, are buried in this cemetery in graves that are now unmarked or have unreadable markers. There are 160+ unidentifiable markers in this old family cemetery, many of them just field stones. There are also several now unmarked grave sites.

James Angel Sr.'s father, Archibald "Arch" Angel, is thought to have been born in western North Carolina when it was still a Province of Great Britain. He was the son of William Angel II (1752-1853) and Mary Rachel Godwin (abt 1752-abt 1850). William II was an immigrant from Shropshire, England. His wife, Rachel, is thought to have been born in the British Province of North Carolina.

Arch's mother (James' pat. GM), Rachel, was living with Arch's family in 1840, as she had for several years, when she was nearing 90 years of age. As mentioned earlier, she is buried in the Angel Family Cemetery.

James' mother, Nancy Ann Trammell, was born North Carolina, possibly Orange County. She was the daughter of Revolutionary War soldier, Dennis Trammell (1759-1849), and Elizabeth Brassfield ? (abt 1757-abt 1820). The maiden name for her mother, Brassfield, is uncertain as it may have been her married name from a previous marriage.

About 1830, James Angel Sr. married Sarah "Sary/Sally" King (abt 1813-bet 1870/80). Several family trees incorrectly show James as also having been married to Mary Ann "Polly" Adkins (1833-1912). Mistake. He was never married to her. That was James Henry(?) Angel, the James Angel he is often confused with. A number of family trees also show Sarah's middle given name as Elizabeth. That was her sister's name (Elizabeth "Lizzy" King, 1819-1870/80). Elizabeth, another daughter of William King, was married to Dennis Angel (1819-bet 1858/60), another son of Arch Angel.

James Angel and Sarah "Sary" King were married in Campbell Co., TN about 1830. He was about 24, she about 17. Sarah's father was William King I (1785-bet 1841/50) and Elizabeth MNU (1789-bet 1841/50). She and her parents lived in the Capuchin area, not too from where the Angel family lived in Angel Valley. Her brother, William "Billy" King II, married Milla "Millie" Angel (1816-bet 1861/70). She was James' sister. As mentioned earlier, another daughter of William King, Elizabeth "Lizzy" King (abt 1819-bet 1860/70), was married to Dennis Angel (abt 1819-bet 1858/60).

A number of Angel and King family trees mistakenly show Sarah's parents as Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880)and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881). Actually, Thomas was her uncle, a younger brother of her Sarah's father, William I. If Mary, who was born in 1800, had been her mother she would have to had been about 12 years of age in 1812 when she would have conceived Sarah.

Thomas Murray King and Mary Cox, who married about 1814, later had daughters named Elizabeth and Sarah. Those daughters were Elizabeth King (1818-1896) and Sarah Drucilla "Sally" King (1835-1909). Each married a son of Daniel Strunk (1775-1851), whose family lived close to the Kings after they moved to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co., KY about 1819.

To reiterate, the King and Angel families once lived near each other and were closely related by marriage. James Angel I had a sister, Nancy Ann Angel (abt 1820-bet 1892/1900), who married Enos King (abt 1816-bet 1892/1900), the second born son of Thomas Murray "Tom" King and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox. Enos & Nancy were my paternal GG-grandparents.

The 1870 US Census shows Jackson "Jack" King (1842-1919), the first born of Enos and Nancy, as married and living very close to the farm of James' widowed wife, Sarah (King) Angel, in Scott County. Also, a daughter of Enos King and Nancy Angel, Mary Ellen "Polly" King (1844-1928), married Archibald "Archie" Angel (1841-1901), a son of James Angel Sr. and Sarah King.

James and Sarah were married for at least 31 years and had 13 known children. They were Thomas Angel (1832-1912), Lewis Sevier Angel (1834-1908), William Benjamin "Ben" Angel (1836-1917), Martha Angel (1839-aft 1863), Archibald Angel (1841-1901), Nanna Angel (1845-1850), Nimrod Angel (1845-1882), Sarah "Sally" Angel (1846-1921), Nancy A. Angel (abt 1848-1912), James Angel Jr. (1849-1913), Robert Rolen Angel (1851-aft 1870), Rosania Angel (1856-bet 1860/70) and John H. Critendon Angel (1858-aft 1870). As mentioned earlier, these children are different from the children of James Henry (?) Angel.

It is thought that James Angel I died between 1860-70 in Scott Co., TN at the age of 55-65. He does not seem to appear in any census after 1860. He is buried in the Angel Cemetery (aka Angel-Wright Cemetery) on land that was once part of the Angel family farm near present day Ketchen in NE Scott Co. (then Campbell Co.), TN. He and his wife, Sarah, were living in Scott County at the time of his death, possibly on the farm that his father, Arch, once owned.

Sarah died between 1870-80, also in Scott Co., TN, at the age of 57-67. She appears in the 1870 census living with three of her children (Robert, Nancy & John), ages 13-19. She does not appear in the 1880 census. She too, is buried in the Angel Family Cemetery. At least three of their children (William, Nimrod & Sarah) are also buried here.

The exact burial sites for James Angel Sr. and Sarah in the Angel Cemetery (aka Angel-Wright Cemetery) are now unknown. This cemetery contains over 160+ burial markers that are now unidentifiable, many of them just field stones. There are also a number of unmarked grave sites as well. Unfortunately, cattle have been allowed to get in to the cemetery and have done considerable damage to some of the burial markers.
