Laura Emma Ellis, daughter of James WIley and Cosby Ellis was born in Johnsonville, March 12, 1867. She died at Carmi November 24, 1942. She married Lafyette Spicer.

Daughter of James Wiley and Elizabeth (Brown) Ellis. Wife of Lafayette Spicer.

Laura Vertrees, formerly of Wayne county, died November 24 at her daughter, Mrs. William Bratton, in Carmi. Buried at Wayne City. She was the daughter of the late J.W. Ellis of Johnsonville. She married Lafayette Spicer. He died June 3, 1926 in Wayne City. She then married Samuel Vertrees of Burnt Prairie August 30, 1930. He died October 8, 1939. She leaves her daughter, Mrs. Bratton and four other girls: Mrs. Iona Bratton of Carmi, Inez Adams of San Bernardino, California; Mrs. A.J. Streigel of Murphysboro and Mrs. Bert Pennington of Vandalia; and one son Alvin D. Spicer of Cisne. She also leaves three brothers, Logan of Xenia, John and Robert Ellis of northern Illinois. From 12/10/1942: She leaves 4 brothers and one sister: Robert of Chenoa, John of Hume, Milus of Willspoint, Texas and Logan of Paxton and Hattie Burgess of Dixon.
