Research by J. Kelsey Jones:
John Roy b. 4 Feb 1743/4 received land from his father in what is now Fredon township, Sussex County, New Jersey 13 Feb 1769, the land being purchased by the elder John Roy 12 July 1764 from John Coursen (Liber L:23). He had evidently removed to Sussex County and there m. Margaret Schaeffer related to be b. 1745. “Margaretta” Schaeffer was baptised 17 Sept 1749 (Walpack Church) the daughter of Casper Schaeffer and Maria Catharina Bernhard of Stillwater, Sussex County. A brother, Peter Bernhard Schaeffer was born 28 July 1744 and a brother, Valentyn Schaeffer was baptised 9 Mar 1747, his birth probably occurring in 1746. It is more likely that Margaret was born in 1748 or 1749.

John Roy was a private in Capt Gaven McCoy's company, 1st regiment of Somerset militia (Bernards Township), he evidently returning to Somerset County for the revolutionary cause, though his wife and children presumably remained in Sussex County. He received $36 on 10 May 1781 for the services of a two-horse team for 3 ½ days during the Revolution which was paid in Sussex County (certificate 559).

Will of John Roy of Hardwick, Sussex County dated 26 Jan 1803. Wife to have horse, saddle and riding chair, milch cow, 5 pounds worth of furniture, profits from farm for maintaining children, and 1/12 part of estate when youngest child is of age. Daughter, Abigail McCollum 20 pounds. My old farm which lies on the hill (this was the farm of which his father deeded to him 13 Feb 1769 and being on “Atwood's Mountain,” presently south of route 94, west of the East-West Jersey line and probably near but mostly north of Ridge Road. It passed out of the Roy family in 1804) and remainder of moveable estate sold. Daughters, Hannah Johnson, Susannah, Margaret, Sarah Hunt, Elizabeth, and my wife each 1/12 part and my three sons, John Casper, B. Shaver, and Joseph each 2/12 part. After wife's decease residence and property sold and proceeds divided among five daughters and three sons as above. Deed of release to be given John Johnson for house and lot at Newton, which he occupies, provided he signs a deed for lot on Great Road, adjoining church lot at Newton. Daughters, Hannah Johnson and Sarah Hunt to be charged with the amount of their outsets. Executors, brothers Stephen Roy, Insley Roy, and Abraham Shaver. Witnessed by Samuel Griggs, David Gustin, and William Hankinson. Inventory filed 28 Feb 1803. Renunciation by Stephen Roy as one of the executors, 10 Mar 1803. Proved 16 Mar 1803.

John Roy d. 1 Feb 1803.

Will of Margaret Roy of Hardwick, Sussex County, dated 19 Feb 1814. Daughter, Susan my right in land at Newton, now occupied by Isaac Basset, which belonged to my husband, John Roy, being the 1/2 part of said lot of land to which I am entitled by will of said husband; also all other estate real and personal. A note of $150 by John C. Roy payable to Joseph Morris Roy, son of Barnard S. Roy dec'd to be held and interest used for education of said Joseph and when 21 he may have principal. Executrix, daughter Susan. Witnessed by John Coursen, Louis D. Seelhorst, and Enos Coursen. Proved 12 July 1815. Inventory filed 1 Dec 1815, $235.

Margaretta Roy of Hardwick d. 9 June 1815 aged about 70 (Sussex Register). Her death related to be 5 June in Schaeffer records. No memorial marker.
