Joseph, sometimes called "Biff," or "Bibby" for his babyface as a young man, was the fifth of 13 children. Born in Tiverton, he grew up in neighboring Fall River, and lived most of his adult life in the Hyde Park section of Boston. He was named for his uncle, Joseph Arthur Généreux, but unlike his uncle he mostly went by Joseph.

A veteran of World War II, Joseph served in the 1st Service Command of the Army Service Forces, based in Boston. He was an employee at the Johnson Brass Foundry for many years.

Joseph died in December of 1988, the third or fourth of the Roy adult children to pass away (it is unknown when his brother Raymond died, other than it happened after his brother Andre).
