He was a career Naval officer, retiring in 1970 as a Master Chief Damage Controlman.

He joined the United States Navy starting in 1943-44.
He started working at Lakehurst (blimp division), then was on the USS Wakefield (AP-21). While he was on it, the boat struck a mine and he was the one that sounded the alarm. He got a medal from the president for it and was promoted to SFC. He was stationed out of Long Beach (his home was in Compton), and then moved to Jamul, California (west of San Diego) by his retirement.
