Lucious Wells was among a number of newcomers who arrived in 1829 to settle Illinois in what is now Rock Island County. This included Rinah Wells and his four sons, Rinah, Jr., Lucius, John and Samuel, who also settled on Rock River; Joel Wells, Jr., who settled near Hampton; Joel Wells, Sr., and his sons Levi and Huntington Wells, who settled at Moline.

Lucius Wells, Esq of Hampton, died Thursday of last week at his home in Hampton. He was born in Windham County, Vermont and came to Wayne County, Illinois about 1820 when he was 16-17 years old. He was a soldier in the Blackhawk War and Indian frontier wars. He was married in Wayne County, Illinois and came to Rock Island County in 1832. He was a Universalist in belief practice and was aged 82 years. He leaves a wife, Eunice McMurphy, some 7 years his junior. They had 13 children, 7 of which were surviving at the time of his death:
