Judith Lucille (Lucy) Nielsen Plunkett, died peacefully at her home in Rockport on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. She was 83 years old and the 7th of 13 children born to the late Severt and Nellie Nielsen of Waupaca, Wisconsin. Lucy graduated from Waupaca High School in 1945 and moved to Chicago where she met the love of her life, Jim Plunkett, a Naval Aviator and World War 2 Veteran. Jim & Lucy were married in 1950 and moved to Boston, where they lived until 1959 when Jim was transferred to Redondo Beach, CA. Jim & Lucy returned to Acton, MA in 1962 and both Jim and Lucy worked for Digital Equipment Corp. until 1987 when Lucy retired after Jim’s sudden death. At the suggestion of her best friends (Private) , Lucy moved to Rockport. Lucy loved Rockport, especially summer days at the local beaches with her grandchildren. She became an active member of the Garden Club and a volunteer at both Halibut Point State Park and Addison Gilbert Hospital. Lucy was a very active and progressive lady, in touch with the changing times and politics, embracing new technology and travelling regularly. Lucy enjoyed walking through the community, swimming at the Y and yoga right up until her death. Lucy was the anchor of the large and geographically diverse Nielsen family, often travelling on a moment’s notice to support her brothers and sisters in failing health, and their loved ones, to cope with those difficult times. She was a treasured by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by many. Lucy is survived by her companion for the last 13 years (Private), her beloved son (Private) and partner (Private) and son (Private) and wife (Private) and also Lucy’s “adopted” son (Private). Lucy is also survived by her beloved grandchildren (Private) , her brothers (Private), (Private) and (Private) Nielsen, her sisters (Private), (Private) and (Private) , her sister’s in-law (Private), (Private) and(Private) Nielsen and numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to niece (Private) who along with Lucy’s youngest sister (Private) and brother (Private), travelled across the country to help care for Lucy so that she could stay in her home until her death. Lucy’s ashes will be buried next to her parents and siblings in the family plot in Waupaca, Wisconsin.
