Kirkland, Former Fire Chief, Dies
Ed R. Kirkland, 64, a former chief of the Ottumwa fire department, died at 12:45 p.m. today at his home 829 Richmond avenue, following a lingering illness.
The son of Charles and Rebecca Kirkland, he was born July 7, 1885, at Burlington. He was a city fireman for 23 years prior to his retirement in 1941. He served as chief of the department in 1930 and 1931.
Kirkland was an expert cabinet maker.
He was a member of the Woodmen of the World lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie; two sons, Ralph and Donald Kirkland, both of Ottumwa; a granddaughter, Donnie Sue Kirkland, Ottumwa; five brothers, Benson Kirkland of Villa Park, Ill., Harold Kirkland of Waterloo, Louis Kirkland of Atkinson, Neb., Wesley Kirkland of Atkinson, Neb., and Emery Kirkland of Mountain Home, Idaho, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Chase, Atkinson, Neb.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd, his parents, and two sisters.
The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel awaiting completion of arrangements.

Major of the Willard Street Methodist church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
