Rev. Charles Kirkland, member of a pioneer family of this commumtv and a brother of Judge Louis J Kirkland of Vinton A sister. Mrs Emily K. Marshall, lives in Cedar Rapids, and another brother. Dr. B F. Kirkland, in Long Beach, Calif. The Rev Mr Kirkland was 83 years old He was born in Philadelphia When he was 14 his family moved to Urbana, where he grew to manhood and was married to Miss Rebecca J Brody, after which he entered the Methodist ministry. In the earlv -80 s he was a circuit rider in western Kansas, returning to Iowa a few years later In 1905 the family moved to Atkinson. Concerning Mr. Kirkland the Graphic said "Though not actively engaged as a pastor after coming to Atkinson, Mr. Kirkland continued in religious activities as long as his health permitted After coming here he served his church as a district elder for mnv years, and was frequently called upon to, temporarily fill the pulpit of a local or nearbv church, or to officiate at a funeral service Besides being a scholarly stu- dent of the Bible, he always kept himself well informed on public affairs by intensive reading. Though extremely handicapped in recent years by rapidly failing sight, he continued to keep abreast of the times by daily reading and it was his pleasure to discuss with friends a wide variety of subjects of public importance and interest. About two years ago he was struck by an automobile and suffered a fractured leg. Though the mjuiv healed and he was again able to v mt with friends uptown, ne never quite regained his strength and his health began to fail lapidly several months ago. The six sons of Mr Kirkland were his pallbearer. He is survived by seven children, 29 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Two daughters died before him.
