Retired Air Force Maj. Harvey S. Sweet Sr., 86, was born in a rural cabin in Hartshorne, Oklahoma on April 29, 1929 to the late Cleveland and Fannie James Sweet and passed away peacefully at his home in Catoosa, Oklahoma on Tuesday, July, 21, 2015.

At the age of six, along with his two brothers and three sisters he went to live at Goodland Academy in Hugo, Oklahoma, an Indian orphanage at the time, where he resided until his graduation from High School. Although the word "Orphanage" brings many negative images to mind, Harvey looked back at his days at Goodland with nothing but loving and cherished memories.

After his graduation, he went on to attend college at Oklahoma State A&M before answering the call to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School, he went on to serve in numerous rolls which included a Radar Intercept Officer, Minute Man Missile Commander, and Navigator. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict and included among his many other awards and accommodations, was the Distinguished Flying Cross with a gold leaf cluster, one of the Air Force's highest honors. Harvey served in the Air Force for 20 years and upon completion of this career, he went on to serve our nations veterans for another 20 years in the capacity of Supervisory Loan Guarantee Officer at the Veterans Administration office in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Born with a sense of adventure, as a young man, Harvey traveled throughout the United States with the Hugo Bros. Circus where he performed in various roles such as a horse trainer, elephant trainer, and clown. His life-long love of animals continued throughout his life; often breaking horses for his friends in his spare time. Harvey was also an expert with the Bullwhip, performing in shows throughout the United States and Japan, where he wowed the audience with his skill. One of his favorite tricks was to snap a cigarette out of a volunteer's mouth with his whip. This trick was often done with his young son, Harvey Sweet Jr. serving as his volunteer.

Harvey was an avid golfer, amassing what always believed was the largest collection of golf clubs west of the Mississippi whose total value was appraised at around $210 (LOL). He also loved "garage selling" (hence the golf club collection) and folks in Muskogee were often treated to the sight of him tooling around town looking for bargains on his little red motor scooter with his faithful dog, Sammy, riding shotgun.

Preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Velma Jean Sweet, in 2011 and his brothers, Eugene and Bobby.
