Billie Maxine (Sweet) Montgomery, 85, of McAlester, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at her residence. Billie was born to Cleveland and Fannie Leigh Sweet on Aug. 15, 1931, in Hartshorne. She graduated from Goodland Academy, a Presbyterian boarding school for American Indians. She married James "Jim" Montgomery on Dec. 2, 1950, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was a homemaker and she and Jim were stateside missionaries for the Baptist Missions. They started, and pastored, the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hartshorne, pastored Blanco Baptist Church and also served as a supply ministers filling in at various Baptist churches in the area. Billie worked as a den mother for Jones Academy in Hartshorne and taught special education at Hartshorne School. She enjoyed quilting, reading and writing poetry. Billie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Billie was preceded in death by her parents, Cleveland and Fannie Sweet; a daughter, Sharon Marie Montgomery, and brothers, Bobby Sweet, Eugene Sweet and Harvey Sweet. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bishop Chapel of Memories officiated by the Rev. Chip Lott. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester.
