Christene Head Waits, 92, passed from this earth for her heavenly home, to join loved ones gone before, on Thursday, April 9, 2015. She was born in San Augustine, Texas, on January 9, 1923, to Henry Hearl Head and Mittie Wright Head Bosworth. Christene married James "Jimmy" Modrell Waits, Jr. on July 26, 1941. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jimmy; four sons, Donnie Ray, Ronnie Lee, Jerry Wayne and James "Jim" Modrell Waits III; grandson, James "Jimbo" Modrell Waits IV; great-grandson, Harbor Forest; two brothers, George Hearl Head and Charles Beaman Head; and four sisters, Lorene Flukinger, Olive Bronsell, Marguerite McMillan, and Esther Butzow. She is survived by her sister, Josie Mae Stevens; three children, Janet Eileen Black and husband Bobby of Friendswood, Michael "Mike" Wayne Waits and wife Debbie of Sargent, and Deborah "Debbie" Jeaneane Pennington and husband Brett of Angleton; daughter-in-law Vonnie Gunter and husband Roger; fifteen grandchildren, Shelley Chaumont and husband Dwayne, Erica Cummings and husband Chris, Josie Kirk and husband J.T., Christopher Waits, Kenny Black and wife Jaime, Chrisi Forest and husband Cade, James Tatum, Molly Black, Katie Bell and husband Jeremy, Kelli Carson and husband Lee, Michael Waits Jr. and wife Jodi, Zachary Moffitt and wife Kelli, Alex Pennington, Seth Pennington and Eric Pennington; and twenty great-grandchildren, Carleigh and Casidy Chaumont, Dylan and Brooklynn Cummings, Quentin and Lawson Kirk, Tatum, Jaxon and Tyson Black, Lake and Everli Forest, Avery, Landon and Addilyn Bell, Aribella and Sawyer Carson, Cason and Allie Waits, Lexi and Kenneth Pennington; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Her compassion and tenacity will live on in her family. Pallbearers were her grandsons Kenny Black, James Tatum, Christopher Waits, Zachary Moffitt, Michael Waits, Alex, Seth and Eric Pennington. Christene was dedicated to her family and served as Girl Scout Leader, Boy Scout Den Mother, Softball Coach, Seamstress for Zelma School of Dance, hairdresser and was number one fan for many athletic events, band performances, recitals and plays. She not only made clothes for her children but dozens of costumes and prom dresses for grandchildren. Christene was an excellent teacher on subjects like backyard gymnastics, tree climbing, swimming, water skiing, canoeing, card etiquette, first aid, and basic survival skills. She was a registered first aid instructor and water safety instructor. Summer vacations were spent with family on a Texas river or beach. She shared her love of nature with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Christene loved to play cards and was a member of a bridge club for many years. From 1968 to 1985 she worked for The Doctors' Club of Houston as Office Manager and Bookkeeper. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 2:30 P.M., at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston, Texas 77055. Visitation with the family was from 1:00 to 2:30 P.M. on the same day, with interment at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories.
Sister Gail Mathews and Brother Jimmy Haugland served as the ministers for the service.
