Josie Mae Head Stevens, 90, went to be with her LORD December 7, 2016, in Houston, TX. Jo was born August 26, 1926, in San Augustine, TX and grew up The Heights in Houston. She was the 7th of 8 children (including 5 older sisters) of Sula Armenta Wright Head and Henry Head. She loved and admired her mother who raised the 8 children alone while working as a seamstress in downtown Houston. Jo loved to tell many stories of sitting at Mitti's feet while she sewed clothes for the girls; going to her uncle's farm in east Texas; and of her sisters taking care of her. She learned early how to find the good in hard times.

She married the love of her life, Eldred Nicklis Stevens, 31 Oct 1944, at the young age of 18. From the time she met him, listening to him preach, until the last days of her life, she praised him and described to anyone who would listen of the magnificent man he was. She labored throughout her life as not just a preacher's wife, but as a co-worker who loved the people they served and trained and mentored young couples who attended the Preston Road School of Preaching. She and Eldred served church families in Houston, Stillwater, OK, Nashville, TN, Fort Worth and Dallas, TX. After Eldred's death in 1979, she continued to serve the Preston Road School of Preaching until she decided to move back home to Houston in 1983. In Houston she continued her work for her Lord through serving at the Bammel Church of Christ.
Jo's greatest passion of life was her three children, 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. At a moment's call of need, she would drop what she was doing, buy a ticket and show up on the doorstep of any of these children. Her arrival was always welcomed, and her presence would delight young mothers, in-laws and children. She could lighten even the heaviest of circumstances.

In her family, Jo marked the last of her generation on this earth. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Eldred, granddaughter, Lygon, son-in-law Dale Ward and daughter-in-law Sarah Stevens.
Jo is survived by:
Her children: Patricia Ward, Gail & Richard Matthews, Nick & Cindy Stevens.
Her Grandchildren: Steven & Kristen Ward, Thomas & Sherry Ward, and Stefani & Christopher Barrington; Elizabeth Matthews & Nick Tasto, Michelle & Chris Beineman, and Ashleigh & JR Rickertsen; Lauren Stevens, Nicklis & Brittany Stevens, and Lexy & Jonathan Christner

Her Great-grandchildren: Josh & Karissa Ward, Christopher & Adam Ward, Sam & Katherine Tasto, Abigail & Liam Beineman, and Tom Rickertsen

Also she is survived by loving nieces, nephews, and a host of friends
