Dr. Gilbert Ambrose Brungardt, June 3rd 1930 to December 29th 2010, died peacefully at age 80 at Stella Maris hospice in Timonium, Maryland, after living for four years with cancer in a determinedly positive way.

He was born to Ambrose and Adelia (Dreiling) Brungardt and was raised on the plains of Western Kansas near the town of Victoria. He was the third of eight children.

He attended high school at St. Joseph's Seminary in Rensselaer, IN, graduating in 1948. He received his Bachelor's of Science in Music Education from Ft. Hays State College in Hays, KS, his Masters in Music from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and his Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL. An honorary doctorate was granted to him by Towson University.

Dr. Brungardt loved music and loved to teach it, and taught passionately as a choral conductor at Belleville High School in Belleville, KS, Washington University, University of Illinois, Towson University, and Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Upon his return to Towson University in 1967 he became the Chair of the music department and then the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication.

He met the love of his life, Anna McConnell, when she sang in his choir at Ft. Hays State College. They were married on March 5th, 1955, and were beloved to each other until she died on January 2nd, 1997. Together they had two daughters, Theresa and Margo.

Gilbert had a lifelong dedication to providing the opportunity for people to experience the Fine Arts as an expression of his deep and abiding love of the arts. In addition to teaching he participated in numerous organizations including Young Audiences of Maryland, The Maryland Arts Council, and was a founding member of the Asian Arts and Culture Center at Towson University. He was the Music Director and Choral Conductor at Immaculate Conception Church in Towson for more than two decades, and was the recipient of many awards and accolades.

The National Guard counted him as an enlisted soldier from 1950 through 1955. Gilbert was a man of great intelligence and strong opinions, tempered by his diplomatic skills and dry wit. He was a kind and patient man who met adversity with a positive attitude and without complaint. Traveling, golfing, playing the piano, and singing were among his favorite things to do. He had a very fine collection of hats.

Gilbert was a beloved brother, father, and grandfather, and is survived by his siblings, Sister Valeria Brungardt, Paul Brungardt, Cecelia Brungardt, Yvonne Rohleder-Braun, and Ruth Polifka; his oldest daughter, Theresa Brungardt and her children Skyler Brungardt and Adriana Brungardt, his younger daughter, Margo Brungardt-Smith with her husband Albert Edward Smith III and their children Albert Edward Smith IV and Rachel Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, & more.
