Lou Hammer was born March 23, 1902 in Kimball, Minnesota, the son of Frank and Francis Hammer. Lou's early years were spent in Kimball and in 1918 the family moved to a farm near Alexandria. Lou left the farm in a few years and went to work for the Ford Garage in Alexandria. On May 25, 1932 Lou was united in marriage to Ann Blomlie, a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital. To this union, one son was born, Richard Gale, who lives in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. A few years following his marriage Lou bought his own truck and went into business for himself as an oil jobber. Lou retired in 1967 after 44 years on the truck.
Lou entered Bethany Home in 1977 and died there on April 12, 1981, at the age of 79 years. He is survived by his wife, Ann Hammer of Alexandria; son, Richard Hammer of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; brothers, Joe, Leo and Tony Hammer of Alexandria; sisters, Ann Hammer of Alexandria; Helen (Mrs. Fred Peterson) of Alexandria and Margaret (Mrs. Jesse Hedlund) of Alexandria. Lou was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Chris, Ray and sister Tillie.
;Mass of Christian Burial was April 15, 1981 from St. Mary's Catholic Church of Alexandria with Rev. Arthur Hoppe and Rev. Joseph Korf officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery of Alexandria. Pallbearers were Donald Mayer, Orrie Bjerkness, Leo Doebber, Fred Polesak, Darrell Flaig and Lawrence Kvitek. Arrangements with Anderson Funeral Home.
