Joseph Frank Hammer was born February 1, 1896, at Algona, Iowa, son of Frank Hammer and Frances (Mayer) Hammer. Joseph attended grade school at Kimball, Minnesota. On June 12, 1923, Joseph was united in marriage to Mathilda Loeffler, at the Millerville Church of Seven Dolors. Joseph farmed from 1923 to 1937, was employed by the Soo Line Railroad from 1937 to 1946. He worked on Construction for four years. In 1951, he was employed in factory work at Rockford, Illinois until 1973.
Mr. Hammer passed away January 12, 1986, at Bethany Home. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Alexandria. He is survived by his wife Mathilda, three daughters: Mrs. David (Geraldine) Tvrdik of Alexandria, Minnesota; Mrs. Vern (Mary Lou) Kummet of Loves Park, Illinois; Mrs. Theresa Svec of Lowry, Minnesota; four sons: Frank Hammer of Alexandria, Minnesota; James Hammer of Miltona, Minnesota; Merlin of Bloomington, Indiana; Edgar Hammer of Loves Park, Illinois. Also surviving are thirty four grandchildren, thirty two great grandchildren; three sisters: Ann Hammer, Mrs. Helen Peterson, Mrs. Jessie (Margaret) Hedlund; and one brother Anton Hammer all of Alexandria.
Mass of Christian burial was held January 15, 1986 from St. Mary's Catholic Church of Alexandria with Father Kenneth Cavanaugh officiating.
Pallbearers were Daryl Tvrdik, Dwight Hammer, Joey Hammer, Donald Hammer, Gerald Hammer and Allen Gerdes. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery of Alexandria. Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home, Alexandria.
