Charles J. Stein Sr., 90, of Longwood at Oakmont, formerly of Elizabeth Township, Ellwood City and Butler, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014.
He was born Nov. 19, 1924, in Butler, to the late John and Mary Edna McGuire Stein.
He leaves behind a loving wife, Julia Zachar Stein; five children, John C. and Mary Kay Stein, of Oakmont, Cynthia and Raymond Houck, of Oakmont, Marguerite and David Schmidt, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Charles J. Stein Jr. and Elizabeth Stein, of Chester Springs, and Michael X. and Leisa Stein, of West Chester; 14 grandchildren, Michael, Genevieve, Abby, Hunter, Jake, Chad, Preston, Cooper, Sophie, Ellie, Hailey, Will, Owen and Mason; and one great-grandchild, Sophia.
Charlie graduated from Butler High School in 1942 and joined the Navy during World War II, fighting in the Pacific for two years.
After his discharge, he began his college studies in engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in June 1949.
He married the love of his life, Julia Zachar, on June 11, 1949. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in June 2014. Charlie worked for US Steel from 1951 to 1983, serving as superintendent of the Seamless Mill in Ellwood City until 1979, followed by a superintendent position at US Steel National Works in McKeesport, until his retirement in 1983. Charlie continued working as a consultant for another 20 years, first with several foundries and most significantly with Damascas Steel Plant in Beaver.
Charlie enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and daily crossword puzzles.
He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Elizabeth. Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 101 McLay Drive, Elizabeth, PA 15037. Private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Butler. The Stein family is deeply grateful to Catholic Hospice for their guidance and faithful care.
