Gerard J. "Popeye" Stein, 83, of 179 Saxonburg Road, Summit Township, died at 9:12 p.m. Saturday at Butler Memorial Hospital. Born in Butler, Dec. 14, 1920, he was the son of John V. and Mary Edna McGuire Stein. He served with the Army's 112th Infantry, 28th Division during World War II and saw action throughout the European Theater. He was a life member and served as steward of the Joseph T. Black VFW Post 249.
Mr. Stein was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.
Surviving are a son, John R. Stein of Butler; a sister, Mrs. Mary E. Loutzenhiser of Butler; a brother, Charles J. Stein of McKees Rocks; a grandson, and a number of nieces and nephews.
His wife, Marsha Nagy Stein, died Feb. 10, 1976. Two brothers also preceded him in death. STEIN - Friends of Gerard J. "Popeye" Stein, who died Saturday, April 24, 2004, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St. A blessing service will follow at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Harry Bielewicz, his church pastor, officiating. Burial will be at North Side Cemetery. Members of Joseph T. Black VFW Post 249 will hold memorial services at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Butler County Unit, P.O. Box 3014, Butler, PA 16003; or the American Heart Association, Western Pennsylvania District, 10 Duff Road, Suite 304, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
