George Walter Metcalf died Monday evening, September 8, 2014. He was the youngest of 14 children born August 9, 1927 to Bergie Almira Allman Metcalf and Elbert Franklin Metcalf of Charlotte County, Virginia.

Mr. Metcalf was a rural route mail carrier for 27 years for Pamplin and Cullen residents. He served in 1945 during the end of WWII in the United States Navy. Having only ten months in the Navy, he was drafted into the Army in 1950 for the Korean War. He retired in 1985 and worked on the family farm up until a year ago where he loved growing things and keeping the farm neatly trimmed.

His was survived by his wife of 63 years, Marie Finch Metcalf; a son, Ronnie Metcalf and wife, Sharon; a daughter, Cheryle Dixon and husband, Jerry; three grandchildren, Ron Metcalf and wife Beth, Harry Dixon, Stacy Dixon; one great-grandchild, MaKenzie Metcalf; two sisters, Pauline Dunnavant and Marie Carson.

Mr. Metcalf was a member and former deacon of Spring Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of the Pamplin Masonic Lodge where he received his 50 and 60 year pins.

Funeral Services were held Friday, September 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Shorter Funeral Home with interment following in the Spring Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
