Barbara Jean McNurlin, 78 of Independence, MO, passed away, Monday, June 16, 2014 at her residence. Services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 19, 2014 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Burial will follow in Mt. Washington Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m., until service time Thursday at the chapel. Donations may be made in her name to Omega Hospice. Barbara was born February 4, 1936 in Kansas City, MO to James A. and Mildred Pauline (Aston) Phillips and has been a lifelong area resident. She was a beloved single mother, grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed arts and crafts, decorating, gardening, "building" and especially spending time with her family. She raised 5 children and 2 grandchildren and was very proud of her family. She was a member of New Hope Community of Christ. Survivors include; 2 sons, Jim McNurlin and wife Mary and Mike McNurlin all of Independence, MO; 3 daughters, Kim Hawley and husband Michael, Kelly Helvie and husband Fred all of Independence, MO and Elisha Ortiz of Overland Park, MO; a sister, Gail Franklin of Bates City, MO; a brother, Terry Phillips of Dover, MO; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Jean Nicodemus in 1982, 2 sisters, Judy Shockey and Mildred Brecht, 4 brothers, Al, Don, Robert and Larry Phillips; 2 grandsons, Michael Seth Hain and Andrew Redford and a granddaughter, Carrie Ehlers.
