OBITUARY
Samantha Powell, daughter of Charles and Sarah Powell, was born in Boone County, Indiana, Mar. 24, 1867, and came with her parents to Chariton County in March 1874, where she grew to womanhood on a farm near Indian Grove. She was married to William J. Pittman, Oct. 25, 1886, and continued to live in the same community for a number of years, then they moved to Kansas City. She and her husband were both specialist in music, and after living in the city for a few years they finally settled in Roseberry, Idaho, where they homesteaded some land and lived on it the allotted time to claim their title, then they came back to Kansas City.
Two months ago Mrs. Pittman visited for a few days in the vicinity of her old home and seemed to be in her usual good health. About one week ago she was taken suddenly ill, and on examination by her physician, it was found that she had a hopeless case of internal cancer. She came to Mendon, where Dr. A.W. Zilliman was called in consultation, who could see only a faint spark of hope, and told her so. But life is sweet, and she was willing to suffer, if it could only be prolonged to her.
On Sunday, June 30, accompanied by her husband and Dr. Zilliman, she went to Columbia where on Monday she submitted to a surgical operation, from which she rallied, but at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 4, she closed her eyes to the scenes of Earth and was numbered with the dead.
She leaves to mourn, her husband, three brothers, five sisters, and a large circle of relatives and friends. Her remains were brought to Brunswick Friday, July 5, where they were met by friends and conveyed to Indian Grove, and on Saturday morning, July 6, in the presence of a large congregation of sympathizing relatives and friends, she was tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the Christian Church near Indian Grove.
Funeral services were conducted by the writer, assisted by Rev. Estel Fry. CARTER DEWEESE
