San Francisco, July 14. -- Julian Hawthorne, 88-year-old author and son of Nathaniel Hawthorne, famous American literati of the nineteenth century, died at his home here today. Hawthorne was the only son of the noted writer. His death came as a surprise to members of his family. He seemed on the road to recovery after surviving a serious ailment a month ago. . . . The deceased was a prolific writer of historical biography. His personal reminiscences of great men of history have been hailed by critics as literary achievements. The old author occupied a modest apartment in San Francisco with his artist wife, Mrs. Edith Garrigues Hawthorne whom he married in San Diego in 1925 after the death of his first wife in Georgetown, Conn. . . . The novelist was born in Boston in 1846, just a few doors from the house in which Edgar Allen Poe first saw the light of day. His father, Nathaniel and his mother, Sophia Peabody Hawthorne, later moved with their children to the Hawthorne ancestral home in Salem. Julian was graduated from Harvard in 1867 and after his father's death, went to Germany and later England with his mother. Upon his return, he launched into an active writing life that spanned a half century. He leaves besides his widow, three children, Hildegarde Hawthorne, novelist; Frederic Hawthorne, member of the editorial staff of the New York Herald-Tribune; and Mrs. Clifford Smythe of New York.
