In 1915, Lewis was elected Superintendent of Highways, later moving to Colchester Station, New York where he purchased a farm. In 1927, they moved to Fishkill, New York. Here, Lewis served as superintendent of farms for Henry Morganthau. He purchased the Wickwire home in Deposit, New York and returned there in 1932. About 1944, the family returned to Walton where they built a home on the former North estate. Lewis was a great reader and kept up with national and local affairs.
