Joseph Farrell Shepherd, 96, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014. He was born on May 15, 1917 to George Edward and Lucy Blanche Lewis Shepherd in Liberty, Idaho. Farrell grew up in the Liberty/Montpelier area until he went to serve in the Navy in the summer of 1942. After returning from World War II, he lived in Salt Lake City for a short time.
Farrell married the love of his life, Lois Maxine Berlin, on December 2, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple. Farrell and Lois moved to Ogden in 1947 for a year before settling in South Ogden for the last 65 years. They celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary last December.
He had a strong testimony of the gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully as a Bishop, High Councilman, and Stake Patriarch. He served on three missions in Texas Louisiana, Scotland and Utah Ogden Mission.
Farrell was the director of the Union and Student Activities at Weber State University for 36 years, the Mayor of South Ogden for 10 years, Founder and on the Board of Directors for WSC Credit Union, Executive Board member for the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of the Lions Club. Farrell was honored by having the Student Union Building at Weber State named after him. He was also awarded the Silver Beaver for his years in the Boy Scouts.
Farrell is survived by his wife, Lois Maxine Berlin; children, Bruce (Sydnee) Shepherd, Shauna (Julian) Martinez, Hal (Kjerstin) Shepherd, Kelly (Stacey) Shepherd, and Douglas (Jennifer) Shepherd; 22 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Grenville "Pete", William "Bill" Shepherd, Todd Shepherd, and Kay Shepherd.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the South Ogden 4th Ward, 4075 Orchard Ave. Friends may visit with family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Lindquist's Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.
