PHILIPSBURG - Funeral services for Ralph Harmon Thompson, 88, of Philipsburg will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Beezer Heath Funeral Home, Philipsburg with the Rev. William R. Walker officiating.
He died at Windy Hill Village, a part of Presbyterian Senior Living, in Philipsburg on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Friends will be received on Friday, Feb. 7, from 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Philipsburg Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by members of the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
Born Sept. 19, 1925, in West Decatur, he was a son of Charles and Lulu (McDowell) Tompson.
He was Protestant by faith.
Mr. Thompson was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the European theater and was a prisoner of war. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for going under fire to rescue a fellow soldier during the invasion of Italy.
In 1965, he established the Pike Coal Company of which he was the owner and operator until retirement.
On Jan. 10, 1964, he married Janice Marie Wrye of Morrisdale.
He was a lifetime member of the Philipsburg Elks Club, a life associate member of the F.O.P., Bald Eagle Lodge No. 51 and enjoyed hunting, fishing, canning and running his fruit and vegetable stand. Most of all, he loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Janice of 50 years; three sons, Gregory Alan Thompson of Johnston, Ralph Kevin Thompson and his wife, Kristen, of York, and Dennis Thompson and his wife, Sherry, of Houtzdale; his sister, Muriel Kyler; a sister-in-law, Yvonne Thompson; a brother-in-law, Jackson Wrye; a sister-in-law, Diane (Wrye) James and her husband, Robert; five grandchildren, Sean, Hannah, Katelyn, Jennifer, and Jordan; two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Domanic; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Doris, Bernice and Irene; and brothers, Clinton, Leo, Charles, Fred, Robert, Roland, Burtis, and Leroy; and his son, Bradley Kent Thompson in 1994.
The family request memorial donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
