CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio - Burtis W. Thompson, 77, formerly of West Decatur and Sun City, Ariz., died Tuesday, June 15, 1993, at the Cardinal Retirement Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Born May 18, 1916, in West Decatur, he was a son of Charles and Lula (McDowell) Thompson.
On Sept. 19, 1936, he married Julia V. Swales.
He was a former employee of General Refractories at West Decatur, then a co-owner and operator of Thompson Brothers Coal Company and later co-owner of the Thompson and Phillips Coal and Clay Company of Philipsburg, from which he retired in 1968.
He is survived by the following children: Donald W., Burlington, 111.; Dallas G., West Decatur; John H., Kent, Ohio; and Mrs. James (Lois Ann) Mort, West Decatur.
In addition, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Leroy G., Morrisdale, R.D.; Leo M., West Decatur; Charles W., Morrisdale, R.D.; Ralph H., Munson; Clinton D., Philipsburg R.D.; Dorothy Hafer, West Decatur; Beatrice Kolbe, Philipsburg R.D.; and Muriel Kyler, West Decatur.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, on March 19, 1991, three brothers and a sister.
He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist, West Decatur, and belonged to B.P.O.E. 1173, Philipsburg.
Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dahlgren and Gilham Funeral Home, Philipsburg.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Norman L. Marden officiating.
Interment will follow at Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
