Cora Almina Nielsen Santos
PETERSBURG, IL - Cora Almina Nielsen Santos, 89, passed away from natural causes at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill., on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014.
She was born in Waupaca, Wis., on March 11, 1924, a twin daughter of Severt Lars Nielsen and Nellie Ann Sherman Nielsen. She married Richard Anthony Santos on Oct 25, 1945, in Astoria, Ore.
Cora had resided in Hayward Calif., Anderson, Calif., McAllen, Texas, Yuma, Ariz., and lastly residing at Countryside Estates in Petersburg, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (2006); six brothers: James, Fredrick, Everett, Kenneth, LaVerne and Richard; and two sisters: her twin, Nora, and sister, Lucille.
Surviving her are (Private), (Private), Eugene and (Private).
Cora is survived by two sons, along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Cora proudly served her country in the Navy Waves in WWII. She attended the 2013 Honor Flight to Washington DC where she was one of only two female veterans on that trip.
Golfing was her primary passion; she even once made a hole in one and made sure that everyone knew about it.
There will be a celebration of life open to the public at Countryside Estates from 6-7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 23. There will be no other local funeral services as Cora will be interned in California with her husband.
Donations can be made to the Illinois Honor Flight or to Countryside Estates Daylily project for continuing care of the flowers she most enjoyed.
