Matilda was one of the thirteen children born to William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio, Margaret Jane as a widow later of Douglas County, Kansas.

She was the granddaughter of Jonathan "John" Ralston and Elizabeth "Betsy" Pitzer Ralston of Brown County, Ohio.

When she was just five years old, in 1845, her father William "Hugh" Kennedy died suddenly in Brown County, Ohio in a cholera epidemic.

In 1855, three years after her death, her widowed mother Margaret Jane, joined with about twenty-five Kennedy family members who all relocated to Douglas County, Kansas, settling in the Kennedy Valley near the Wakarusa River.

Twelve-year-old Matilda died in 1852 and was buried in Brown County, Ohio, three years before her mother and about twenty-five family members relocated westward to Douglas County, Kansas to settle in the Kennedy Valley on the Wakarusa River.

She was especially close to her younger sister Salina Kennedy, as they were born just a year apart.

It was very emotionally difficult for her mother Margaret Jane, at age 54, to make the decision to relocate to Douglas County, Kansas, leaving behind the graves of her parents, some of her siblings, her husband Hugh and those of her daughters Matilda and Elizabeth Kennedy Liming and her two year old baby brother Joseph Warren Kennedy in Brown County, Ohio.

After leaving Brown County, Ohio, her mother remained in Douglas County, Kansas for the remainder of her life, living to the age of eighty-seven.

Matilda Kennedy is buried in the same cemetery as her young brother Joseph Warren Kennedy and her older sister Elizabeth Kennedy Liming.
