Ole Olson Bagaason Jr. was born near Calmar, Winneshiek County, Iowa, on December 15, 1869. In his infancy, he was brought to his parents’ new farm at Riceland in Freeborn County, Minnesota. In 1895, he and brother Willie were butter makers. Ole married Nettie Bertina Ingvaldson, a Riceland native, at Bancroft township on July 4, 1907. For a few years, he worked in a factory at Albert Lea, but he had his mind set on owning a large farm. In 1913, Ole, Nettie, and their baby girl went to Canada with Nettie’s sister, Hannah, and her husband, John. The women joined their husbands, who’d gone on before them, in May after a “going away” party was given for the ladies. They homesteaded a section of land in Leo, Alberta, with each family taking half of the property. Ole helped John build his home, and Nettie gave birth to their only other child, a boy, in 1914. They became naturalized Canadian citizens. Ole Olson Bagaason Jr. developed mastoiditis and died of a brain abscess at age 56, on September 7, 1925. He was buried in Omega Cemetery in Gadsby, Alberta. Nettie Ingvaldson Bagaason and children left Canada in 1926 and settled in Eugene, Oregon, where she died on January 12, 1948. She was buried there, in Rest Haven Cemetery.
