TELL THE STORY · REMEMBER THE LIFE

Denis Isaie Pelletier was a lifelong resident of Lac Baker, New Brunswick, Canada. Born there in 1870, he was one of at least 12 children; and like his father and grandfather before him, he was a farmer who worked long hours to provide for his family. At the time of Denis' birth, Lac Baker was just a small mission parish, established only 15 years earlier; and neither a chapel nor a church, nor even a school, had yet to be built. His parents, in fact, had been among the earliest wave of French couples to settle in that village.

In 1901 at age 30, Denis married Luce Gendreau at L'Église de St. Charles Borromeo, just across the border in St. Francis, Maine, where Luce had been born. After the wedding, however, the couple planted themselves in Lac Baker, where between 1901 and 1921 their family grew to include ten children.

Denis Pelletier died in Lac Baker at age 58 and was buried there in St-Thomas-d'Aquin's parish cemetery. At the time of his death, he and Luce had been married for 28 years. His death certificate states (in French) that there was no doctor available to sign off on the official paperwork, but that he appears to have died from pulmonary congestion.
