Claire Marie (Pelletier) Salisbury, Clara to those who knew her, was the eldest of ten children born to Denis and Luce Pelletier. Her parents married in January of 1901, and Clara arrived by the close of the year — just in time for Thanksgiving.

Clara grew up in Lac Baker, a small town in New Brunswick, Canada; but as a young woman in her twenties, she immigrated to the States — first settling in Portland, Maine, where in the summer of 1930 she gave birth to her eldest child.

In 1937, at age 35, Clara exchanged wedding vows with 48-year-old Leslie Salisbury, a Michigan-born World War I veteran who had been recently widowed. Along with Clara's young daughter, the couple established themselves in South Portland and added three more children to the family — two girls and a boy. Leslie died in 1955 at age 66; and Clara eventually moved to Connecticut where almost all of her siblings then lived.

Claire Salisbury passed away in 1979, at age 77, in Waterbury, Connecticut, and was interred at Saint James Cemetery in Naugatuck, in a family plot which had been purchased by her brother Pat. Widowed at 54, Clara had survived her husband by more than two decades. She left behind three daughters and a son, several grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, three sons-in-law, and three of her nine brothers and sisters.

Rest in peace, Clara.
