Joseph Élude Banville, Joe to those who knew him, was born in Lac Baker, New Brunswick; but when he was a young boy, his family moved about 100 miles east to Arseneau Siding (a rural village now known as St-Martin-de-Réstigouche) in Réstigouche County, New Brunswick. As a young man, Joe had crossed the border into Maine on numerous occasions, working as a farm hand and wood cutter. His mom had passed away in 1929 and ten months later his dad remarried; but in the summer of '37, about a year after his dad's death, Joe headed back to Maine, crossing the border at Fort Kent. By 1940, Joe was lodging with a couple in Portage Lake and working as a wood cutter; and in the fall of '42, he was enlisted into the U.S. Army.

Six months after joining the military, while stationed in Arkansas, Joe exchanged wedding vows with Juliette Pelletier. According to the couple's marriage record, Joe was still a resident of Portage Lake, Maine, and his bride was residing in Waterbury, Connecticut; and following his discharge from the service, the Banvilles established themselves in Waterbury where they raised six daughters.

Joe Banville passed away in 1990 at age 79 and was interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown, Connecticut. At the time of his death, he and his wife had been married for almost 47 years.

Rest in peace, Joe, and thank you for your service.
