John S. Hensel, 99, of Messiah Village, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in the village nursing care center.

He was born March 1, 1914, in Newburg, the son of the late Charles and Rachel (Snoke) Hensel.

John was the widower of Irene (Frey) Hensel, who passed away in 1990.

John worked for the former Pennsylvania Railroad for 9 years and McGraw-Edison Co. in Harrisburg for 24 years and retired from Messiah Village after 15 years, where he worked in the maintenance department. He was a member of Messiah Village Brethren in Christ Church and served as Deacon for 50 years.

John is survived by his wife of 16 years, Ruth L. (Heisey) Hensel; one step-daughter, Linda J. Byers (Ethelbert) of Chambersburg; two brothers, Earl of Crescent City, CA and Glenn of Chambersburg. He also leaves behind four step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and David and five sisters; Grace, Anna Mary, Elizabeth, Florence, and Esther; one step-daughter, Brenda K. Fritz (Bill) of Mountville; and one step-grandson.

Services will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at 11:00 am in the Messiah Village Brethren in Christ Church, 100 Mt. Allen Dr., Mechanicsburg. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 10-11 am at the church. Burial will be held at 2:30 pm in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Messiah Village Endowment Fund, 100 Mt. Allen Dr., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
