Elizabeth Mae "Bessie" Alexander, 88, of Newman died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She was born in Daviess County, was a homemaker and owned and operated Alexander Grocery in Newman for 18 years. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Reed, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and enjoyed quilting, crafts, gardening and canning.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, W.A. "Buck" Alexander; two sons, Donnie Alexander of Newman and Larry "Boot" Alexander of Henderson; a daughter, Judy Greenwell of Owensboro; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Calhoun of West Louisville; and two sisters, Lillian Calhoun of Owensboro and Muriel Mattingly of Curdsville.

Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Reed. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery in Reed. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Haley-McGinnis and Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the St. Augustine Building Fund.
