Eliza M. Buss was born in East Kent, England, July 28, 1841. When a little child she came to this country with her parents, who settled near Buffalo, New York, but later moved to Kendall, Wisconsin. In 1860 Miss Buss was married to Samuel Bates and to this union were born seven children. The husband and two of the children preceded the wife and mother to the other life. After a short sickness of pneumonia, Mrs. Bates passed away early Thursday morning, March 1.
The children surviving are: Mrs. August West, Carl, Sam, and Elmer of Darlington, and William, Ladysmith, Wis. Besides the children Mrs. Bates is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Stephenson of Darlington and Mrs. Elizabeth Brown of Cresco, Iowa; and a brother, A.J. Buss of Milwaukee.
The funeral service was held at the house Sunday afternoon, March 4, 1923.
