John Buss was born in Kent County, England, October 25, 1839 and died at Hardy, Nebr., Feb. 3, 1920, age 80 years, 3 months, and 8 days.
He came with his parents to America when 4 years old and settled at Buffalo, New York, later he removed with the family to Wisconsin.
When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in the Union Army and was a member of Co. B. 23rd Reg. of Wisconsin volunteers. He served 3 full years and was in the Vicksburg campaign and the battle of Champion Hill, and was twice wounded in battle.
Mr. Buss was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Buss at Belmont, Wisconsin in 1869 and three sons and a daughter were the children of this union.
They moved to Smith County, Kansas, October 15, 1871 and settled on a homestead, but for the past 23 years has been a resident of Hardy or the nearby community.
Mr. Buss has been ill for about six months and at times has suffered severely and has gradually become weaker until the death angel brought his body release and although conscious nearly to the last, he was patient in sufferings and the soldierly bearing showed in the fortitude with which he endured to the end.
He leaves to mourn his loss besides the companion of his life, two sons, Henry of Seattle, Washington, Daniel of Kolin, Montana, and the daughter, Cora of Casper, Wyoming.
One son, Richard, had been gone only a few months. There are 13 grandchildren.
Again we are reminded how we are swiftly passing away and as these patriotic men of the past are going from us, may we try harder to take up the burdens of responsibility with courage that will win the "Well done" of the Great commander.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. B. Maxey at the Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, A mixed quartette sang and six of our khaki boys in uniform were pallbearers.
The body was laid away in the Hardy Cemetery.
