Bernard Carolan emigrated from the townland of Rathmore, Athboy Parish, County Meath, Ireland. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States on April 28, 1896 aboard the ship the "Pennland" which had sailed from Liverpool, England. In Chicago, Illinois, his destination, he boarded with cousins named Dunne. He became a naturalized citizen on March 13, 1905 with two of the Dunne cousins as witnesses. On May 16, 1904 he married his first wife, Ann Rowen (Ann Winifred Rowan). They had one child together, Eugene, born in 1906. Annie died on Nov. 11, 1907 of "cardiac dialation".

On Feb 3, 1909 Bernard married Delia Farley (born Bridget Mary Farrelly) also of County Meath. They lived in Chicago where Bernard worked as a Streetcar Operator for Chicago Surface Lines which later became the Chicago Transit Authority. Bernard and Delia had six sons (including Eugene) and one daughter. Delia passed away in 1919 of the Spanish Flu. As was common among Irish families, her younger sister Katherine (Catherine) helped Bernard care for the children until they were grown. Catherine and Bernard married on Jan 16, 1929.

Bernard retained the spelling of his last name, Carolan, although his brother John, who also emigrated, revised his to Carlin. Bernard and John had a sister, Mary (Clynch) and three other brothers, Phillip, Hugh and Michael, all of whom remained in Ireland. Their parents were Patrick Carolan and Mary Clerican (Clearken/Clerkin) of Rathmore, Athboy, County Meath, Ireland. The name Carolan derives from Ó Cearbhalláin which originated in Counties Cavan and Monaghan before migrating south to County Meath. Variations include: Carolin and Carlin.
