John Carlin (Carolan) emigrated from the townland of Rathmore, Athboy Parish, County Meath, Ireland. He arrived in Boston. Massachusetts, United States on July 23, 1897 aboard the ship the "PS.S. Pavlonia" which sailed from Liverpool, England. He settled in Chicago, IL where he first "roomed" with a "Widow Ryan", her son, daughter and three other roomers. He worked as a switchman for the railroad and became a Chicago Policeman by the time he had moved in with his cousins, the Dunnes, about 1904/05. After retiring from the police force, he worked for Delta Star Electric Co. on N. Fulton Ave. in Chicago.

On April 3, 1918 he married Della A. Donelan (born Bridget Donellan) from Galway, Ireland and they continued to live in Chicago, IL. His aunt, Ann (Anna/Annie) Dunne lived with them. They had two sons, John Patrick Carlin (1919-1983 )who became an attorney and James F. Carlin (1921-1993) who became a CPA.

John's last name was originally spelled Carolan. His brother, Bernard, who also immigrated to the US retained the original spelling of the name. He also had a sister, Mary Clynch (noted as Lynch in the obituary) and three other brothers, Phillip, Hugh and Michael. Their parents were Patrick Carolan and Mary Clearken (Clarken) of County Meath, Ireland. The name Carolan derives from Ó Cearbhalláin which originated in Counties Cavan and Monaghan before migrating south to County Meath. Variations include: Carolin and Carlin.

Note: Although his tombstone states he was born in 1880, he was actually born in 1877 per his Irish birth certificate and civil registration. He is buried with his wife Della and her sister Marie Donellan.
