Patrick Carolan and wife Mary Clerkin, lived in the townland of Rathmore, in the Barony of Lune, in the Catholic Parish of Athboy, in the Civil/Electoral District of Rathmore, in the Poor Law Union of Trim in the County of Meath, Ireland.

Patrick died at home in Rathmore of "cancer in head" per the Civil Registration of Death for the District of Athboy, the Union of Trim. His daughter Mary Carolan, who later married Thomas Clinch in 1917, was with him at the time of death.

Patrick and Mary married in the Catholic Parish of Skryne (modern day Skreen) on 16 Feb 1868. Their witnesses were John Moore and Jane Magrath. They had six children: Philip (b. 1869), Hugh (b. 1871), Bernard (b. 1873), Michael ( b. 1875), John (b. 1877) and the youngest, Mary (b. 1882). John and Bernard emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, United States and Mary lived with her husband Christopher Clynch in Johnstown, County Meath.

Variations on the name Carolan are Carrolan, Carolin and Carlin. It is said to be the diminutive of the name Carroll. It derives from Ó Cearbhalláin which originated in Counties Cavan and Monaghan before migrating south to County Meath.

"Erected by Bernard and John Carolan Chicago in loving memory of their Mother Mary Carolan who died March 10th 1907 aged 65 yrs. Their brother Michael who died April 15th 1891 aged 15 yrs. Also Philip and Mary Carolan whose remains are interred beneath. Also their father Patrick Carolan who died May 23rd 1909 aged 76 yrs. Their brothers Hugh who died March 11th 1939."

Tombstone erected by Bernard Carolan and John Carlin of Chicago, Illinois, USA, sons of Patrick and Mary Carolan. Bernard emigrated to the USA in 1896 and John emigrated in 1897.
